Also known as the  sacral chakra or the creativity and sexual chakra. Located just above the pubic bone and below the navel, it encompasses the genital region and the hypogastric plexus. Svadhisthana can be translated as “the dwelling place of the self,”

When your second chakra is balanced it can lead to feelings of wellness, abundance, pleasure, and joy. When this chakra is out of balance, a person may experience emotional instability, fear of change, sexual dysfunction, depression, or addictions. You can open this chakra with creative expression and by honoring your body. The energy of this chakra is feminine, passive, and lunar.

The Focus of the Second Chakra

The second Chakra is about creativity and creation.  This can be interpreted literally in relation to procreation and making babies, it can also be interpreted as bringing new life to things. Cooking, baking, gardening, painting all things are creating and creative.  Any time we make something physical or mental and transform it we are creating and using our creative energy. The challenge we face in the western world is that there comes a point as we grow towards adulthood where creating and creativity is frowned upon.  How often have you heard someone who wants to be a singer/dancer/actor/painter be told to get a “proper job”.  As we grow western society works to put out creative flames in order for people to follow its rules to live by. The challenge then comes when in life people are then asked to think “outside the box” if you have not kept a hold on your creative streak and nurtured and nourished it, you may be challenged when it comes to thinking abstractly.

Playtime is not just for kids

How many times have you watched children launch themselves from swings and slides without a care in the world? Or sit for hours quite happily drawing or having afternoon tea with their friends (that you can’t see)?

When did you last sing or speak in public? Draw something or cook a meal from scratch? Chances are if these are things you believe you are good at, feel comfortable with and enjoy, then it may have been fairly recent. However, we all have our Achilles heal, something which we dread the idea of doing.  Possibly, because somewhere along our life’s journey we may have been told we were not good at X or were teased for it, so, we put X away in a box, no matter how much we enjoyed it and never revisited it again, and if it did come back to us we were filled with a sinking anxious feeling. What we didn’t realise when we put these things in boxes because of someone else’s opinion of us is that we are helping to create a block in our second chakra.

Connecting with yourself again and working to create a ‘new you’ is also connected to the second chakra. To help the flow of positive energy and releases blockages in your second chakra, go back to that box and take the lid off it, play like a child and ignore the naysayers.  If it makes you feel good it is good for you. One of my personal phrases that I use regularly in life now is this:

“If it makes your heart sink, walk away.  If it makes your heart sing, join the choir!”

Let’s talk about Sex

When talking about sex in relation to the second chakra, this is not just solely in relation to the physical act, it’s also about honouring and respecting your body. Connecting with your emotions and recognising where you may be holding onto actions and feelings that harbour guilt and negativity.  To bring balance back to Svadhisthana, make a commitment to process your emotions in a healthy way.

Left nostril breathing called Ida Nadi breathing will help to open up the second chakra as it brings forth lunar energy. Simply close your right nostril with the first two fingers of your right hand and inhale and exhale through the left nostril, only for 8 to 10 breaths. Meditation with a focus on the second chakra also brings about personal magnetism, refinement in behavior, freedom from diseases, and longevity.
